Smartphones are computers built into telephones that make available for mobile use many of the features that are available in their larger relatives, e.g., tablets & laptops. The requirements peculiar to smartphone hardware (e.g., small screens & tiny, limited, or missing keyboards) make it necessary to modify standard software to fit this pocket-sized environment. The trend in operating-system (OS) design is to make the OS look and work the same across the hardware spectum from desktops to smartphones. We are in the middle of this somewhat painful trend and it will likely take a while for the goal to be reached satisfactorily.
